• Do not clean up or dispose of anything.  The damaged property is your evidence.

• Take photographs and keep all receipts.

• Make notes of all information, conversations, and anything regarding the claim.

• Verify all licenses and references before dealing with any professionals on your claim.

• Read in detail and make sure you understand all documents prior to signing anything; especially with your insurance company, general contractors, and even public adjusters. 

• Ask about other hidden coverages and especially how much coverage you are entitled to for living expenses while your property is under construction.

Beware of signing cleaning and general contractors’ forms.  Make sure you are not authorizing them to make claim decisions with the insurance company directly, leaving you out of the decision making process.
